UCL was one of the first universities in the UK to be formally awarded for its efforts to understand, and take steps to address, racialised inequalities in the academy.
In 2015 the university was only one of eight institutions to receive a Bronze award for a pioneering, national pilot of the Race Equality Charter for higher education and in 2026 achieved Silver status.
Dr Michael Spence, UCL President & Provost, said: “This recognition reflects the sustained commitment across our university community to advancing race equality. Supporting the diversity of our community is fundamental to who we are as an institution. Achieving the Race Equality Charter Silver Award recognises the progress we have made, while also reinforcing our commitment to continuing this important work in partnership with our staff and students.”
Co-Chairs of the Equality Monitoring and Advancement Group (EMAG), Professor Alison Koslowski, Pro-Provost (Equity and Inclusion), and Kae Ohene-Yeboah, Head of EDI Programmes and Charters, said: “Achieving UCL’s first Race Equality Charter Silver Award is an important milestone and represents the culmination of more than five years of dedicated work from EMAG and from colleagues and students across our community to drive meaningful change. While we are proud of the progress recognised through this award, it also reinforces the importance of continuing to take evidence-based action to address the systemic and structural barriers to race equality at UCL.” The actions within UCL’s Race Equality Charter Action Plan are a key part of delivering the institutional priorities set out in the EDI Strategic Plan and UCL People Plan and fundamental in supporting the implementation of the plan are UCL’s Race Equality Steering Group (RESG).
