Parent and Carers Together Group Profiles

Andy Harris: Co-Chair

My name is Andy and I am the Senior Alumni Relations Manager for the IOE. I started at UCL in January 2016 and initially worked compressed hours to give me a day at home every two weeks with my son. Now that he has started school I have reverted to a more conventional working pattern but I am keen to maintain a healthy work/life balance. I volunteer as the press officer for my local rugby team and hope to start coaching mini rugby next season.

Judy Bertfield

I’m Judy and I’m a Senior Philanthropy Manager in the Office of Vice-Provost (Development). I have been working at UCL since May 2016, but graduated with a French degree back in 2000. It’s good to be back after so long!

My role provides me with career progression in a team that embodies a welcoming, open-minded and ambitious approach. I feel thoroughly supported as a working parent, which helps me achieve a work-life balance, and motivates me to get the job done and do it well. Outside of work, I’m busy running around after my 2 children!

Zara Chaudhry

I am an Organisational Development Advisor and a Diversity and Equal Opportunity Liaison Officer (DEOLO) at UCL HR. I  joined PACT as I am keen to assist in whatever ways I can to enable and support staff with caring responsibilities, and raise awareness of the issues faced within the community.  It’s a pleasure to serve this group and I look forward to helping to develop the peer network and its offerings further.

Marjan Jahanshahi

I am a Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology and Principal Investigator at the UCL Institute of Neurology.  I have worked at UCL for the past 30 years. I am a firm advocate of gender equality and am committed to maintaining a healthy work/life balance through providing support for both working women and men in their parental and caring roles. I have both parental and caring roles, respectively for my teenage daughter and my 84 year old mother who has atrial fibrillation.  I think it is essential and timely for institutions such as UCL to move beyond paying ‘lip service’ to these important issues and to lead the way to setting up examples of good practice in the gender equality, diversity and work/life balance arenas.

Deepti Jayawardena-Wilkinson

I work in the Department of Statistical Science as the Departmental Manager and as such, I am happy to be involved in the PACT network and am keen to showcase what the network can offer not only to parents but carers.  UCL staff have a wealth of experience in this area but it can sometimes be difficult to know where to go or who to ask.  Therefore being part of the steering group, I hope that I can play a part providing a platform that aims to support UCL staff who are balancing ongoing caring responsibilities with work.

Moira Wright

I have been at UCL since 2007 initially working for UCL Arena Centre as Projects and Programmes Officer and in 2014 moved to the Information Services Division joining the Digital Education Team as Digital Literacy Officer. I was really keen to be part of PACT due to the experience of my mother who in her later years needed 24hr care due to dementia, stroke and other multiple health problems – although due to my location in London I was not involved in her day to day care. The PACT Forum with talks from UCL staff sharing their experience of caring for parents, what the stresses and strains can be and how important it is to look after the carer proved timely and practical for me – it was also really helpful for to meet others at UCL in a similar position.
