Leadership and governance

Find out about how UCL governs and manages all activities in relation to UCL technical skills development.

About the Technical Skills Development Hub (TSDH)

In 2022, UCL’s Senior Management Team endorsed the establishment of UCL’s Technical Skills Development Hub (TSDH) and the transition of the project to Business as usual. The TSDH is an independent, centrally supported department and the home of the Technician Commitment (TC) at UCL. The TDSH provides support and central oversight of technical career development, technical skills management, and the attraction and retention of technical talent, and does not have any line management responsibility over technical professionals in faculties or central departments. The TSDH facilitates bidirectional communication between UCL’s strategic leadership teams, technical managers, technical professionals, and external stakeholders. The hub is also responsible for coordinating activity relating to the four pillars of the Technician commitment.

Faculties have engaged positively with the Technician Commitment, with some creating faculty-wide Technical Services (or similar) leadership roles, providing faculty oversight, coordinating activities between departments, sharing best practices, and avoiding unnecessary duplication. These technical leadership roles work collaboratively with the TSDH, to ensure alignment between institutional strategy and the strategic priorities of individual faculties.

The TSDH is responsible for digital content management and stakeholder engagement, including our website, SharePoint site, social media and internal newsletter.

About the People in Research Innovation Technology (PRIT) Group and Technical Managers Group (TMG)

The People in Research Innovation Technology (PRIT) Group is a strategic oversight group which took over the responsibilities of the Technician Commitment Steering Group, expanding its remit to include all research, innovation and teaching professionals - ensuring UCL retains and attracts the very best technologists aligned with our academic ambition. It aims to fulfil UCL’s commitment to technical professionals, their continuous development, aligning technical skills provision with academic priorities, and to pioneer technological advances. The membership includes senior academic and operational leaders and is directly linked to UCL’s senior management committee through its membership.

The TSDH relays information between the PRIT Group, Faculty leadership and the Technical Managers Group (TMG), a pan UCL group of managers of research professionals and services. The TMG is co-chaired by the TSDH Manager and a senior technical manager or director.
