International Women’s Day

8 March 2021

This year’s theme is #ChooseToChallenge. Given the greater adverse impact on women (and other minoritised groups), perhaps this is the time to engage with gender equality and start challenging the status quo!

International women's day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is on 8 March and has been celebrated every year since 1911. The aims of IWD are to:

  • celebrate women's achievements
  • raise awareness about women's equality
  • lobby for accelerated gender parity
  • fundraise for female-focused charities

The remoteness of lockdown, however, has not stopped many groups and individuals from coming together to support each other and IWD. There are many videos on Twitter from individuals or societies, highlighting what and how they are choosing to challenge in the coming year.

Indeed, many virtual events being run showing support towards gender equality and charities focused on women. Why not join in one of the events below and show your support for IWD?  They may even help you to #ChooseToChallenge in the coming year!

Alternatively, this year celebrate the women around you and acknowledge the things that make them special.

Please remember that UCL has a number of resources to support you during lock-down. There are social activities to help you meet colleagues from other departments can be found on UCL Meet-Up.
