Resident Doctors (Training) pay scales
There are two national (England) pay scales which resident doctors and dentists in training may be paid under, depending on when they started their clinical training. Individuals must be in a GMC or GDC approved training programme to be paid on a training pay scale. Evidence should be provided of an individual’s ST grade to identify the correct pay point on the training pay scale.
- StR scale - applicable to trainees who were at ST3 and above on 2nd August 2016. Appointments on this legacy training scale are now very rare.
- Resident Doctors pay scale (RDPS) - applicable to trainees below ST3 on 2nd August 2016. There is no automatic, annual pay progression on this scale as progression is linked to stage of training. Individuals may also be eligible for RDPS pay premia.
Clinical Non-consultant (CL) pay scale
Clinical individuals who are neither working at the consultant or SAGP grade, nor in a GMC or GDC approved training programme, will be paid on the clinical non-consultant (CL) pay scale, at grade CL7, CL8 or CL9 as appropriate. Individuals must have either GMC or GDC registration and a licence to practise. These staff must be employed under a joint appointment with an NHS partner and undertaking clinical activity.
