We currently have a network of over 155 Wellbeing Champions across UCL. We believe that Wellbeing Champions can transform UCL for the better.

What is a Wellbeing Champion? 

Wellbeing Champions play a crucial role in promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. They are voluntary members of staff who promote and support the implementation of Being Well at UCL. They do this in addition to their day-to-day roles at UCL, although there no set number of hours for this.  

Wellbeing Champions know their work areas and colleagues best so know what is needed and is likely be most effective.  

  • They foster a positive and supportive environment across UCL   
  • They promote wellbeing initiatives, activities and resources.   
  • They receive the in-house induction training - i-act (accredited by The Royal College of Psychiatrists. 
  • They are the first point of contact in local areas for those needing advice on wellbeing support.  
  • They are supported by, and report into, the Workplace Health team.  
  • They feedback on areas of concern to the Workplace Health team. Feedback is incorporated into the delivery of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy at UCL.   

Person specification 

A suitable candidate will have the following attributes:  

  • An enthusiasm for, and interest in wellbeing  
  • A belief in the value and importance of wellbeing in the workplace  
  • Passion to make a difference to improve the working environment  
  • Confidence to circulate and promote wellbeing information to their wider staff networks  
  • Enthusiasm and motivation to encourage staff engagement through wellbeing initiatives  
  • Desire and willingness to help others  
  • Creativity in organising initiatives and activities with limited financial resources  
  • A basic understanding of healthy lifestyles and health promotion  

What we ask from you

Essential: 

  • Commitment to being a wellbeing champion for a minimum of 2 years 
  • Play an active role in promoting UCL wellbeing initiatives, activities and resources within your department, Faculty, and wider colleague network 
  • Circulate the Being Well newsletter amongst colleagues  
  • Be available for colleagues to contact you with wellbeing concerns 
  • Provide information about Wellbeing at UCL to colleagues and act as a point of contact  
  • Keep up to date with UCL wellbeing activities 
  • Provide feedback on your termly activity as a champion (minimum once per year) 
  • Attend the wellbeing champion termly meetings (minimum once per year) 
  • Attend i-act training within your first 6 months of becoming a champion 
  • Complete a refresher induction training every year 
  • Attend our information session and induction session in order to become a wellbeing champion 
  • Consent to your details being shared on our wellbeing champion directory so that staff know who you are and how to reach you 
  • Be a direct employee of UCL and have approval from your line manager 
  • Inform Workplace Wellbeing of any change that prevents you from continuing as a Wellbeing Champion e.g. parental leave, extended periods of absence, leaving UCL 

Desirable: 

  • Organise wellbeing activities or events for colleagues 
  • Collaborate with other champions and share best practice 
  • Attend ad hoc training events/meetings 
  • Support wellbeing team in evaluation of wellbeing events/activities organised (e.g. record participation, ask for satisfaction feedback)

How we support you in your role

  • Induction and role-specific training, including i-act training (which is accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists) and offers certified CPD points 
  • Access to a dedicated Wellbeing Champion Sharepoint area with relevant resources for your role 
  • Part of the wider network of Wellbeing Champions based across multiple sites – join our Teams channel to connect 
  • 1 to 1 support in your role as and when requested  
  • First to know about wellbeing related training and workshops  
  • Monthly drop-in sessions for peer support, sharing ideas and challenges  
  • Host termly meetings to receive updates on wellbeing activities and developments. Learn best practice, share wellbeing success stories and network with other Champions

How do I apply? 

Important note: We have three recruitment periods across the academic year. Outside of these periods, we will not be monitoring applications, and you will have to wait until next term to sign up for an information session.

  1. Once you have attended an information session, please submit an application form. (Please note that our application form is currently under review and a new version will be available from January 2026).
