UCL Human Resources

Work/life/plus blend

UCL has always supported flexible working as a way of helping our staff to achieve the right work-life balance, but these additional challenges add an extra dimension(s) (work/life/plus) which may throw things off kilter. And as government advice on restrictions adapts, we need to continually tweak things to maintain a balance.

Many staff now have additional caring responsibilities; some staff may be struggling with weak or unreliable WIFI signals, or in finding a comfortable place to sit and work for extended periods of time, this can be especially challenging for those who share a home with lots of other people. Colleagues may also be experiencing mental health issues, that have either been brought on by or amplified by the Covid-19 crisis or by difficult personal circumstances. The information below provides guidance on how you as a line manager can support your team.

Support you can offer as a line manager

  • Talk to your staff about the additional challenges they are facing and any support or changes that could help with their work routine.

  • Familiarise yourself with UCL’s updated policies to support staff during the coronavirus outbreak – in particular the leave and absence section which contains updated information around annual leave, carer's and special leave, together with details of UCL's employee assistance programme partner which is open to all staff.

  • Talk to your HR Business Partner if you are unsure whether the support needed by anyone in your team can be met.

  • Discuss and review your team’s objectives and make sure that they are practical, achievable and relevant given the current climate and individual situations.

  • Take a look at the Making Hybrid Work hub webpages, which provides tailored guidance around the working environment, keeping connected and other aspects of Wellbeing. You can show your support by directing your staff members to pages that are relevant to their circumstances.
