History Undergraduate

Studying history as an undergraduate with us means you will have access to a department of historians working at the cutting edge of their fields.

Your seminars will be in groups of 16 or fewer, and your assignments will receive detailed one-to-one feedback. You have a diverse and dynamic choice of modules that span 5,000 years of world history and are entirely research-led. 

Our unique central London location means you are moments away from important cultural institutions such as the British Museum, British Library, Wellcome Collection and the Warburg Institute.

You will study the Writing History and Making History courses in your first year at UCL. Writing History will not only nurture the articulation of your ideas on paper but also give you the capacity to think critically about your writing.

Abbie Carter (BA History)

I’m going into my second year studying history at UCL and loving it! Having previously studied at another university, I have a wide range of knowledge on halls, societies, the course and living from home. I’m hoping to do a PGCE after I graduate. Ask me anything!

Euan Toh Yu-Yuan (BA History)

I came to university to have fun and reinvent myself, and I like to think that after two years, I have found my stride. University can be challenging, but with advice from people who came before you, it can make things a lot easier.

Aisha Mohamed (BA History)

Having a breadth of topics was really important to me, and UCL History offers such an incredible variety of topics and modules, that go far beyond a core British history. I've studied Early Asian Medicine, The Modern Middle East and Economic History. It's a huge misconception that studying a History degree will give you a limited options of careers after study. Employers, from the NHS to law to the Civil Service, are looking for History graduates.

Rohit Sandhu (BA History Year Abroad)

It is comforting to know that you have time to learn and make mistakes in first year without it being too significant to your overall degree. I am so excited to study in Canada for a year in 2023-24. I know that will hugely enrich my university experience and give me a stronger CV for the future. I've learned core transferable skills such as analytical writing, communication skills and resilience. After I graduate, I'm considering a conversion course and a career in law.

Hashi Sugumar (BA Ancient History)

The Ancient History degree at UCL attracted me due to its various modules. They encompass multiple regions and topics that I had never really considered before. I particularly enjoy my survey modules, such as one on the Hellenistic World, which explores various civilisations through classical texts and archaeological evidence. Directly seeing the artefacts we learn about in the British Museum during seminars is also fascinating.
