The AFRAB Project contributed to the organisation and funding of the international Slafco2 conference held at Université de Yaoundé 1, in Cameroon, by organising a stream entitled “African Legal Abolitions: Rethinking Actors, Chronologies, and Frameworks”. The stream focused on the ideas and actions of African rulers, politicians, intellectuals, legal and religious specialists, free commoners and enslaved persons in relation to the legal abolition of slavery in their countries and regions. The stream consisted of the following panels: Panel 1, ‘African abolitionisms and approaches to ending slavery’, Panel 4, ‘African Legal Abolitions of the 19th Century’, and Panel 7, ‘European Legal Abolitions and African Strategies’. In addition, the AFRAB project sponsored a separate panel – Panel 10 for the conference entitled ‘Postcolonial Legal Abolitions: Achievements and Challenges’. Abstracts for all AFRAB’s panels and presenters’ bio-notes can be found here.
