At the end of second term, UCL hosted the Early Modern Connections Conference - an interdisciplinary event organised by three History PhD students, bringing together scholars to explore the early modern period from diverse perspectives.

At the end of second term, UCL hosted the Early Modern Connections Conference, organised by three PhD students from the history department. Over forty attendees came together to hear from 11 fantastic speakers – many of whom were first-time presenters or towards the start of their doctorate - on all things early modern. Speakers explored the theme of ‘connections’ in terms of global networks and exchanges, theorisations and representations of place, and case studies from the worlds of science, medicine, and literature. In the interdisciplinary sound panel, the audience was treated to a violin performance by Rudolf Balàzs (presenting alongside UCL doctoral student Daen Palma Huse) while exploring the use of ephemeral paper objects as musical tools in eighteenth-century England.

The day was also a celebration of in-person connection, with speakers from a range of London-based departments & institutions, the University of Oxford, and Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. We were delighted to host attendees hailing from Camden to Canada, undergraduates to professors, and members of the general public.
