Taking place annually every October in the UK since 1987, Black History Month is a nationwide celebration of Black people’s contributions to British society throughout history.

MP for Brent East, Dawn Butler, references research from the Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery (UCL History) in the House of Commons Black History Month debate.

“While this British Government hasn’t disclosed a complete list of recipient individuals and firms of bonds related to compensation for the slaves, researchers at University College London have compiled a list of over 46,000 current individuals and groups who have received Government payouts related to the abolition of slavery. Many powerful British families, including current businesses and political elites, in the United Kingdom are among the recipients uncovered by the UCL team.”
