Professor Matthew J. Smith Delivers the 2024 F.E.L. Priestley Distinguished Lecture Series

Professor Matthew J. Smith delivered the 2024 F.E.L. Priestley distinguished lecture series in the History of Ideas at University College, University of Toronto, Canada on 12-14 November.

This esteemed lecture series invites leading academics across a wide range of disciplines to address intellectual themes raised in their professional work and experience over the course of three lectures.

Professor Smith's lectures were titled, Three Island Overtures. In each of his lectures, he explored how time and memory figure in Caribbean nation-making and history-writing through an exploration of the nineteenth and twentieth century Caribbean with special attention to the histories of Haiti and Jamaica. 

The lectures were extremely well-received and drew large audience in person as well as the live-streaming each night.  

Professor Smith also delivered a workshop on the current work of the CSLBS to University of Toronto graduate students in History and Anthropology.
