Successes for UCL History medievalists

Following on from the appointment of Dr Martín Romera as a visiting Marie Curie research fellow from 2018-2020, the past few months have witnessed a succession of achievements for the department's medieval historians, demonstrating UCL History's strength in this area. We're delighted to offer our congratulations to all of these graduates of the department, from PhD candidates to senior lecturers:
- Incoming PhD candidate Jack Ford has secured a prestigious UCL Wolfson Scholarship, which will fully fund his PhD studies for the next three years. Jack has been at UCL since he began his BA in 2013 and will be studying under Dr Sophie Page as he completes his thesis on 'The Five Senses and Affectivity in the Late Middle Ages'.
- Recent PhD graduate and erstwhile postgraduate teaching assistant Dr Benedict Wiedemann (pictured left) has been appointed to a (highly competitive) Junior Research Fellowship at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University. Benedict completed his PhD on 'Papal overlordship and protectio of the King, c.1000-1300' in 2017 under the supervision of Professor David d'Avray.
- Two more senior UCL History graduates have also secured new academic posts. Former MARS MA student Dr Felicity Hill (2012, pictured centre), who went on to complete a funded PhD at UEA before undertaking a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge, has been appointed a permanent Lecturer in British History 1000-1300 at the University of St Andrews. Meanwhile, Dr Ben Savill, who completed his BA and MA at UCL in 2012 before taking up a Wolfson-funded DPhil at Oxford, will become a Lecturer in Medieval History at UEA in the autumn.
- Finally, our senior lecturer Dr John Sabapathy (pictured right) has been awarded a one-year Leverhulme fellowship for the academic year 2018-2019 to work on 'The institutionalization of Europe in the thirteenth century'. He said, "I am extremely pleased and honoured by the granting of the fellowship which will enable me to concentrate fully on a project which has benefitted enormously by being developed through teaching with UCL History undergraduates over the last three years".
