Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite and Natalie Thomlinson discuss women’s experiences in the miners’ strike of 1984-5 in the Kent coalfield. A small coalfield, with just three working pits in 1984, Kent was extremely strong in support of the strike. Women there started to organise in support of the National Union of Mineworkers’ struggle from just a few days into the strike, and their activism was vital to keeping the strike going for an entire year. But there work in the home and behind the scenes was also vitally important.
The event will be a chance to hear the findings of Florence and Natalie’s oral history research and their work in the archives, and it will also be an opportunity to hear from women involved in the strike in Kent, to ask questions, and share your stories. All are welcome, from Kent and elsewhere.
