Abstract:

The Robarts Research Institute at Western University in London Canada hosts an active Medical Imaging Research group. Part of this effort involves the development of systems for image-guided intervention. This presentation overviews the work in the laboratory for Virtual Augmentation and Simulation for Surgery and Therapy (the VASST Lab), dealing with solutions for image-guided intervention in the brain, heart, spine and abdomen. The role of physical modeling, as well as Virtual and Augmented reality in image-guided interventions is emphasized.

Speaker bio:

Dr. Terry Peters is a Scientist in the Imaging Research Laboratories at the Robarts Research Institute, London, ON, Canada, and former Director of the Biomedical Imaging Research Centre at Western University in London. He is a Professor in the Departments of Medical Imaging and Medical Biophysics, and the School of Biomedical Engineering, at Western. His research focusses on the development and application of techniques for image-guided surgery and therapy. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, and has mentored over 90 trainees. He obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the University of Canterbury in NZ in 1974, and joined the MNI as a research scientist in 1978 where he was actively involved in the establishment of the MR imaging program, as well as the development of image-guided stereotactic neurosurgery techniques. In 1997 he joined the Imaging Research Labs at the Robarts Research Institute, where he expanded his research to encompass image-guided procedures beyond the brain.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine; the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists; the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine; the MICCAI Society, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, and the Royal Society of Canada. In addition, he received the Helmuth Prize for Achievement in Research from Western in 2012, and the MICCAI Society’s Enduring Impact Award in 2014.
