The Academic Careers Office (ACO) is dedicated to supporting UCL’s Nurses, Midwives, Allied Health Professionals, Healthcare Scientists, Pharmacists, and Psychologists (NMAHPPs). We work with our NHS Trust partners and engage with NHS Trust teams such as CNMAR and CMORE to deliver an integrated training system for NMAHPPs who hold both clinical and academic roles.
ACO support for NMAHPPs:
The ACO organises annual symposia for our clinical academics and clinical academic trainees. We launched our first symposia for NMAHPPs in research in 2025.
The ACO works with the UCLH Biomedical Research Facility (BRC) to deliver NIHR Pre Application Fellowship support funding. We have awarded five fellows for the next two years (24/25-25/26) to prepare a competitive application for an NIHR career development award.
The ACO provides training programmes for all levels of NMAHPP.
- DATA Arcade, in-house training programmes in digital skills to build capacity for digital/data-driven medicine research,
- ADAPT, personal development schemes which aim to build a more resilient and risk-tolerant academic community through programmes targeted at researchers,
- ACCELERATE, portfolios of training aimed at upskilling the UCL research community in translational research,
- CONNECT, training programmes to improve interdisciplinary work amongst UCL researchers,
- Art of Scientific Writing courses. Taking inspiration and skills from prose writers, this course aims to make the experience of scientific writing faster and easier for researchers.
The ACO supports the CDT in Accelerated Medicines Design and Development co-hosted by the UCL School of Pharmacy. The ACO manages and delivers programmes such as the MiniMD scheme and targeted coaching schemes.
The ACO continually contacts our NMAHPPs to provide notifications and updates on grants and funding opportunities, workshops and trainings, events, and other updates. Our Clinical Academic Trainee Steering Committee allows us to share feedback with our cohorts and communicate directly with you.

The Centre for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional (AHP)-led Research (CNMAR) brings together UCLH and UCL to support and enable nurses and midwives in developing world-class quality of care research. It aims to establish formal Clinical Academic Pathways for nurses and midwives at UCLH and UCL.

The Centre for Medicines Optimisation Research and Education (CMORE) is committed to improving use of medicines by enabling inquiry-based practice, research and shared learning across the patient’s health journey. CMORE combines the clinical knowledge and experience of the pharmacy department at UCLH with the academic expertise from UCL School of Pharmacy and other academic collaborators.
