ADAPT Coaching for Research Technicians
Through online one-to-one coaching, this scheme supports participants to build resilience and cope with challenges in their careers.
The online programme is based on cognitive behavioural therapy, mentoring and coaching techniques and enables Research/Technical Staff to position themselves for success in their future careers.
The scheme is currently open to Technical staff* based at the four LMS Faculties: Brain Sciences, Medical Sciences, Life Sciences and Population Health Sciences, as well as Biological Services.
*Technical Staff includes staff directly supporting research in technical roles. Relevent job titles could include, but not limited to, Auxiliary Technician, Research Support Technician, Senior Research Support Technician, Research Technician and Facility Manager. ADAPT Coaching is all about proactively building the skills to be a more resilient in your career. Some of the topics that our coaches can help participants with are (but not limited to):
- feeling overwhelmed;
- difficulties in being assertive/saying no,
- knowing your own boundaries,
- interpersonal difficulties with managers,
- fear of failure,
- time management,
- work/life balance.
The programme is based entirely online, making it easy for you to fit into a busy schedule. Please note that you can only participate in ADAPT Coaching once: you cannot apply for an extra four sessions after you have already had four.
Yes! ADAPT Coaching for Technicians is funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Applicants will be contacted immediately after applications close with further information and participants will be put in touch with a coach.
You will be allocated four one-hour one-to-one online sessions with a coach trained in a proactive cognitive behavioural coaching approach.
The coaching is conducted through Zoom/ Teams. You can participate in a session anywhere that you have a computer and access to the internet. We insist that participants are in a private space for the sessions where you will not be disturbed, and you are able to have your camera on.
Dr Sue Watson and Laurent Cadet De Fontenay will conduct the coaching. They have a lot of experience with psychological services and supporting early career academics. They also coach as part of our well established ADAPT to Grow scheme.
Your application data will be handled according to official data protection guidelines and won’t be used or shared for any other purpose. UCL will conduct surveys to evaluate the impact of the programme and allow us to make improvements to the scheme.
We understand that something may come up unexpectedly and you might have to miss a session. As far as possible, please try to let your coach know in advance whether you will miss a session so that we can plan accordingly. Note that missed sessions cannot be replaced due to the nature of the scheme.
Surveys! Participants will be surveyed at the end of their sessions and 6 months after that. We will share our analysis of the surveys with the coach so that we can work together to improve the programme in the future.
