In contrast to academic/fellowship grant applications, applying for translational research and innovation grants is all about pitching the end vision and convincing funders that you know what it takes to get there: What is the unmet clinical need? How will you meet this need? What are the project milestones and how much will it cost? For many, the first step to pitching this vision is a written application.
What to expect: In this interactive online workshop, you will learn how to increase your chances of funding success for impact acceleration, knowledge exchange and translational research projects as well as where to find support at UCL.
Participants will be able to:
Recognise the important elements of a translational research/innovation grant application Recognise how to identify the risks of the projects and outline how they will be managed Explain how to strategically apply for funding based on the maturity of one's project and how to link this with one's project milestones. Describe how to protect intellectual property when submitting a funding application. Recognise how to simplify one's message and edit one's ideas for a specific funding call. Recognise how to improve the likelihood of success by ensuring one's application is understood and makes a good impression. Identify where to find support at UCL.
Who should attend?
This workshop is aimed at all researchers at UCL who would like to get to know more about how to put together a winning grant application for a translational research project.
- Learn how to find the story of your translational research idea and how to confidently share it with those who might be able to help fund it.
- Combine theory and practical sessions on developing the perfect 2-minute pitch, confidently asking questions and opportunity to receive feedback.
Participants will be able to: Define and apply the elements of an impactful pitch. Explain and implement techniques for concisely answering questions under pressure.

This online series of three 90-minute interactive workshops will help participants to explore enterprising ideas based on their research. The tools used will help you to develop skills to discover, validate and communicate enterprising ideas from your research. Open to Clinical Research Training Fellows (CRTFs) and Clinical PhD students.
Learn how to: Spot opportunities from your research to solve problems for specific audiences; validate the viability of your ideas; and communicate your ideas to non-technical audiences.
Attend the whole series or any combination of these workshops to discover how to evolve ideas from your research and create impact:
Workshop 1: How to approach opportunity spotting
This workshop will explore how you might identify opportunities from your research. It will look into how your research solves a problem for specific audiences. This will help you to explore how you might translate your research ideas to create impact.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be better able to:
- Find audiences that their research can have potential impact on;
- Ascertain the problems that their research can solve for specific users / customers; and
- Recognise where any products, services or technologies derived from their research can add value.

Workshop 2: Validating the benefits of your idea
What benefits will your research bring and how will you test this? Is your idea realistic? Validating research ideas for commercialisation demands a multifaceted approach. This includes encompassing market research insights, customer validation techniques, and comprehensive competitor analysis. With these tools, participants will be better equipped to refine their ideas to make sure that they meet the needs of their users and customers.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be better able to:
- Gain market insights to inform whether their product, service or technology serves their customer audience;
- Validate and test their idea through feedback with their users or partner organisations; and
- Conduct a competitor analysis to identify key players in their chosen market and to refine their idea.

Workshop 3: Communicating your idea
This workshop aims to equip you with the essential tools and insights needed to convey your research ideas with clarity, impact, and engagement. By incorporating storytelling techniques, effective structuring, and improved communication skills, you will be better prepared to communicate your research effectively to non-technical audiences.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be better able to:
- Convey a complex idea succinctly;
- Adapt their communication style to present to informed non-technical people; and
- Resonate with their audience using storytelling.
