MiniMD Programme

The MiniMD programme is an intensive pilot course that provides non-clinical scientists with direct insight into the clinical pathway.

The MiniMD programme is an exciting introduction to the NHS and healthcare environment in a compact session. This is an immersive course for anyone working in an academic capacity without any clinical NHS context.

This is scheme is aimed for individuals that want to:

  • Improve their understanding of the clinical pathway and clinical research;
  • Improve their collaboration with clinical researchers;
  • Explore translational research as part of their work and career planning.

Participants will meet patients, experience the elements of the clinical pathway and engage with clinicians. The course is an entirely immersive experience and is an observational experience of all aspects of clinical care. Half of the course will be didactic, covering the basics of medical terminology, NHS structure, and patient treatment cycle.

The other half will be observational, observing secondary care in an intimate setting. By the end of the programme, you will have a better understanding of where your research fits in the wider life sciences and begin a pathway of better engagement with the medical and life sciences research community.

Participants will gain first hand clinically supervised experience of:

  • Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
  • Clinical diagnostics
  • Out-patient clinics
  • Ward rounds

Who is it for?

MiniMD is suitable for anyone working in the life sciences in an academic capacity without any clinical NHS context, and with varying degrees of experience, from doctoral students to postdoctoral researchers. The course will focus on general clinical practices.

Participants will be assigned an observership at the hospital, which will require a vaccination/occupational health clearance ahead of time.

Is it free?

Yes, if you are enrolled at UCL the programme is free. MiniMD is funded by the UCL Academic Careers Office through the NIHR UCLH Biomedical Research Centre.

How will the scheme be evaluated?

The Academic Careers Office will send surveys before and immediately after the programme, and a survey six months after completion of the programme. The surveys will help us measure the impact of lessons learned during the programme and how the lessons have affected attendees' professional pathways.
