The video below introduces our research project that is exploring how care is provided in England for patients requiring a referral to an NHS hospital for their abortion.

Sarah's Story

This video highlights that while independent abortion services provide 80% of abortions in England, about 3,000 patients each year require hospital-based care due to health or societal needs. The video shares Sarah’s story* (as a case study) to illustrate the challenges many patients face—such as long travel distances, costs, and delays—when accessing hospital abortion services. The project seeks to gather experiences from patients, healthcare providers, and support networks to inform recommendations for improving NHS abortion care in England.
