1.30pm – 2.30pm: Otto Wolff Lecture: Measuring and Moving on the Child and Youth Mental Healthcare System: Reflections from Canada.
Dr Astrid Guttmann, Co-Director Edwin S. H. Leong Centre for Healthy Children, University of Toronto.
This session will describe a 10-year initiative to develop a data and evaluation platform for children and youth mental health and service delivery in Ontario, Canada’s largest province. The session will touch on the advantages and limitations of using routinely collected health system data for surveillance and performance measurement, and challenges in evaluating a large, system wide policy strategy to improve early identification and coordinated care of children and youth with mental health disorders.
3.00pm – 5.00pm: Catherine Peckham Symposium: The power of data for child and family mental health research
Support for parental mental health is important to give children the best start in life and support their development and wellbeing. In the first half of this symposium we showcase two studies that used linked data for parents and their children.
The first study evaluated the effectiveness of early home visiting support for teenage mothers through the Family Nurse Partnership, using home visiting data linked to national administrative data. The second study explored interrelationships between parent mental health, domestic violence and child mental health using cohort data.
In the second half, we focus on mental health in schools with a presentation on patterns of stress-related presentations to hospital during the school term and holidays.
The final presentation reports an evaluation of the impact of the HeadStart programme for mental health resilience in schools.
Speakers will be Professor Katie Harron, Professor of Statistics and Health Data Science, UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, Dr Ruth Blackburn, UKRI Innovation Fellow, UCL Institute of Health Informatics, Dr Becca Lacey, Lecturer in Quantitative Methods and Life Course Epidemiology, UCL Institute of Epidemiology and Public Health, Dr Sarah Cattan, Associate Director, Institute for Fiscal Studies. The symposium ends with a panel discussion of research priorities for policy on child and adolescent mental health, chaired by Professor Ruth Gilbert, Co-Director of the Children and Families Policy Research Unit at UCL.
The Catherine Peckham Symposium will be followed by a drinks reception.

Astrid Guttmann is a general paediatrician and Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children, Professor of Paediatrics, Health Policy and Public Health and co-Director of the Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Children at the University of Toronto, and Chief Science Officer at ICES, Canada’s largest health services and policy research institute. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Child Health Services and Policy. Her research aims to improve child and family health through population-based studies that inform or evaluate health system programs and policies with a focus on health equity. She serves on a number of scientific and policy advisory committees.
