The opportunity

Computational healthcare brings advanced modelling, data science and high-performance computing directly into clinical decision-making and creates clinical, health system and public health solutions. This enables predictive, personalised insights that improve patient outcomes and system efficiency at scale. The challenge and opportunity are to close the gap between methodological innovation and real-world deployment.

Why UCL

UCL is uniquely positioned to close this gap by combining world-class computational science with one of Europe’s most concentrated academic-clinical ecosystems. We have the mathematical expertise, computing infrastructure, clinical partnerships and patient data to move innovations from lab to clinic at pace.

Strong national momentum around AI-enabled healthcare, plus our advanced research computing infrastructure and curated health data environments, could provide the foundation for impact.

What we propose

We propose a Computational Healthcare Institute (CHI) – a cross-faculty institute to coordinate, scale and translate computational approaches into routine healthcare through a single pipeline from discovery to clinical implementation.

We would structure the institute around three linked pillars:

  • Methods: new computational, mathematical, statistical, robotic and AI approaches emphasising interpretability, robustness and clinical usability
  • Application: applying methods to priority disease domains (including oncology, respiratory, neuroscience) rigorously validated using multimodal data and prospective clinical studies
  • Translation: embedding validated innovations into the NHS, clinical trials and population health settings to achieve measurable improvements in outcomes, efficiency and equity.

The Computational Healthcare Institute would sit at the centre of one of the most integrated academic-clinical environments in Europe, spanning four NHS trusts, three NIHR biomedical research centres and deep expertise across mathematics, computer science, engineering and biomedicine.

The institute would act as a magnet for global talent, industry collaboration and philanthropic investment, establishing UCL as both generator of ideas and delivery partner for the NHS. This would strengthen UCL’s competitiveness for major UKRI, NIHR and industry investments and support government priorities in digital health.

It would also shorten translation timelines to deliver next-generation precision medicine and healthcare at scale.
