Epidemiology is the study of how often diseases occur in different groups of people and why. Epidemiological information is used to plan and evaluate strategies to prevent illness and as a guide to the management of patients in whom disease has already developed. The module provides core epidemiological skills enabling students to interpret electronic health records (EHR) research and to design analyses using EHR. During the module students will learn about: key measures used to assess disease frequency and the effect of risk factors and treatment on disease; they will learn to assess bias and confounding; learn about sources of electronic health record data; and be able to choose the most appropriate epidemiological study design to investigate health questions using electronic health records. Students will be assessed on their ability to apply their learning to developing a protocol to answer a research question using electronic health records.
