IHI's Professor Laura Shallcross took on a national, public health leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic as the academic lead and founder of the UK's largest study of COVID in care homes and as a member of the Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) Social Care working group. The COVID in care homes study, VIVALDI, has delivered timely findings to inform the pandemic response on subjects including vaccine effectiveness, the emergence of variants, the risk of re-infection, and the antibody and cellular immune response following natural infection and vaccination.

Laura was named in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2021 and awarded the Honour of MBE for her contribution to the national pandemic response in Adult Social Care. On 5th April 2022, Laura was invited to Windsor Castle to formally receive the award from Princess Anne.
