"UK phenomics platform for developing and validating electronic health record phenotypes: CALIBER" published by JAMIA

Diagram of how the CALIBER platform links national raw electronic health records for research.

A group of researchers led by Professor Spiros Denaxas, a Deputy Director of the UCL Institute of Health Informatics, have had their paper on the CALIBER platform published in JAMIA

The group (Professor Spiros Denaxas, Arturo Gonzalez-Izquierdo, Kenan Direk, Natalie Fitzpatrick,Ghazaleh Fatemifar, Amitava Banerjee, Richard Dobson, Laurence J Howe, Valerie Kuan, Tom Lumbers, Laura Pasea, Riyaz Patel, Anoop Shah, Aroon Hingorani, Cathie Sudlow & Harry Hemingway) developed an iterative and collaborative approach for creating and validating rule-based electronic health records (EHR) phenotyping algorithms using UK structured EHR. This approach involved expert review interwoven with data exploration and analysis. Such an algorithm translates the clinical requirements for a particular patient to be considered a case into queries that leverage EHR sources stored in a relational database and extracts disease onset, severity, and subtype information. The paper describes the platform, the algorithm development process, and validation consisting of six approaches of evidence.

Using the CALIBER phenotyping framework, the group created algorithms for 51 diseases, syndromes, biomarkers and lifestyle risk factors. The EHR phenotypes are curated in the open-access CALIBER Portal and have been used by 40 national and international research groups in 60 peer-reviewed publications.

This paper descirbes a UK EHR phenomics approach within the CALIBER EHR data platform with initial evidence of validity and use, as an important step toward international use of UK EHR data for health research.
