IHI researcher is awarded prestigious post-doctoral fellowship

5 November 2018

Dr Anoop D. Shah, a consultant in clinical pharmacology and general medicine working at University College London Hospitals, has been awarded a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship from The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute.

Dr Anoop Shah
Dr Shah's project aims to improve the way that diagnoses are recorded in electronic health records. Medical diagnoses are currently not recorded in a structured way in NHS patient records, with important details hidden in text which is difficult to search. More accurate, detailed records will be better for individual care, and will also enable data to be pooled effectively for research to improve healthcare.

The project will involve working with doctors and patients to design better 'information models', ways to organise information in a meaningful way, guided by computerised analysis of existing text in electronic health records. The information models will be tested in clinics to ensure they are usable and useful, in order to define a standard that can be put in place throughout the NHS. This study will focus on patients with heart failure, a common and serious condition in which the heart does not pump blood around the body well enough, but the methods will be published so they can be applied to other diseases in the future.
