Maternal and Child Health

The maternal and child health (MCH) workstream in the Farr Institute, London brings together a broad range of experts and service providers. Research expertise in child health, women’s health, family health/primary care, mental health and cardiovascular disease are all relevant to understanding the life course and clustering of health determinants and outcomes within families.

The MCH workstream aims to tackle the questions: 'What are the determinants and outcomes of family health?' and 'What are the maternal determinants of child health outcomes?' by addressing specific research questions using linked, longitudinal data that connect maternal health care trajectories (and ultimately other family members) with the health care trajectories of their children.

Our ambition is to create a core resource of linked, longitudinal data that links mothers and their children across primary and secondary care services. We propose incremental steps towards this goal that will generate insights into the added value of linkage between individuals, across sources and across services.

The findings from the specific research questions will be relevant to policy, clinical practice, service development, methodology, infrastructure and governance, and public and patient involvement.
