About David Hawkes

Professor David Hawkes is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCL. His contributions to the field of medical image computing have been vast and his research covered a number of conditions/ailments, including: Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, dementia, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, etc. He developed an accurate parametrisation of the X-ray attenuation coefficient, that led to the Jackson-Hawkes Parametrisation (used clinically on the world's first whole-body CT scanner).

Professor Hawkes founded the Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) in 2005, acting as Director until 2015. He was also Interim Director of the Wellcome EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) from 2018-2019. He was elected FMedSci in 2011, FBIR in 2007, FREng in 2003, FInstP in 1997 and FIPEM in 1993. He is co-founder of IXICO Ltd (www.ixico.com) a university spin-out that provides imaging solutions to the pharmaceutical industry, and was Director for several years.

He is currently enjoying his retirement as a volunteer community bus driver in Devon.
