UCL IOE Gardening Project

Sarah’s Garden is dedicated to the memory of Sarah Douglas, who was General Manager of the IOE Students’ Union.

IOE gardeners

1 May 2018

The IOE gardens were created in 2013 by a student-led team, and were designed to encourage birds, bees, bats and butterflies to our campus whilst being sympathetic to the brutalist style of architecture for which the building is Grade II* listed. The gardens are divided into two areas: the Green Garden, which is an open access space surrounded by native hedging, and Sarah’s Garden, which functions as a community garden and outdoor classroom where both novice and experienced gardeners grow flowers, fruit, herbs and vegetables. Sarah’s Garden is dedicated to the memory of Sarah Douglas, who was General Manager of the IOE Students’ Union. She is remembered with great affection, and the garden continues the community spirit she was so good at creating.

Visit the gardens and become a gardener

The gardens are located on the level 5 terrace of the UCL IOE building, above the Institute Bar. If you would like to visit or want to know more about the project, please contact Susan McGrath, who can provide details of workshops and open days. New members of the IOE Gardening Team are always welcome. Previous gardening experience is not necessary – just bring your enthusiasm!
