The Big Christmas Switch Off is back!

27 November 2017

On Christmas day last year, UCL spent over £20,000 on energy. Help UCL to save carbon and money this Christmas by pledging to switch off lights, appliances and equipment over the holidays.

Last year over 100 departments pledged to switch off over the Christmas closure. Thanks to everyone this saved enough energy to keep the lights on a Christmas tree running for over 1,800 years!

Can your department save the most carbon?

There will be 2 £100 Ecotopia prizes:

  • For the department with the highest proportion of staff and students pledging to switch off
  • And the department that saves the most amount of energy over the Christmas period.

You can view your department's energy use at Carbon Culture.

Make a pledge to win prizes!

There are checklists, posters and resources to help you save as much energy as possible, and we're also offering free timers to departments to switch equipment and appliances off automatically. You can also display your departments live energy data via Carbon Culture.

Living in halls?

This year we are working with Reduce the Juice, a sustainability engagement programme for students living in halls. It focuses on saving energy and water and improving recycling in student accomodation.

In February UCL’s halls will be competing against each other to save energy and the winning hall will get a £250 prize budget. To get involved, or if you have an idea for a sustainability project in halls, please email Masa Sprajcar-Rancic.
