UCL wins 'Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Sustainability' award

The Camden Business Sustainability Awards, hosted by Camden Council, is an annual event that aims to recognise, inspire and encourage businesses and organisations in the borough to achieve environmental sustainability. Hosted in the Francis Crick Institute in Kings Cross, a building celebrated for its excellent sustainability credentials, the evening was a success, with keynote speakers presenting from the London Assembly’s Environment Committee and the Committee on Climate Change on the importance of organisations responding to climate change.

This is just one of a series of awards UCL has received this year, that recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution the University is making towards improving its environmental impact. No mean feat with a population of 50,000 students and staff, and an almost 200-year old estate, situated in the heart of London. In the same year, UCL has received a “First” class degree in the People and Planet University League, which ranks universities on their environmental and ethical performance, and the Sustainability team received a Community Impact award at the UCL Professional Services Awards 2017 for helping to save the Tavistock and Torrington Place cycle lanes during the Camden Council consultation. UCL’s Environment, Health and Safety Officer, Evan Landy was also shortlisted from a total of 90 nominees for a Rising Star award for his work on improving UCL’s biodiversity and transforming the estate sustainably, which is a significant achievement. The Sustainability team, which has been in place at the University for just 5 years, has worked extremely hard to embed sustainability into the core of the institution. But our success comes from a university-wide effort; we wouldn’t have been able to improve our impact so significantly without having our 50,000 community on board with this monumental challenge. We can’t wait to celebrate with the students and staff who have helped contribute to improving UCL’s environmental and social commitments at UCL’s Annual Sustainability Awards in September and I thank everyone for their hard work over the years to help UCL achieve this award.”
