Sustainability is a hot topic. Increasingly more employers, are looking for students with sustainability skills and literacy. And not just in environmentally focused jobs, but in engineering, retail, urban planning and many more!

In collaboration with UCL Careers and UCLU's Green Economy Society, our environmental week will expand your knowledge on the business and global challenge elements of the sustainability sector and pursue a career in the field by learning about:

  • Analysing real-world situations critically - more and more jobs are global - and an understanding of global issues is vital.
  • Demonstrating leadership and ethical awareness - increasingly desirable to conscious customers
  • Working wihtin different social contexts
  • Engaging with a diverse range of people
  • Using resources wisely and saving money

Why?

FACT: Students with sustainability skills, who have the ability to solve our global challenges are highly employable. Organisations now seek employees across the entire organisation who are sustainability literate - not just in 'sustainability' roles. For example Procurement Officers need to know about procuring items which are in line with the Modern Day Slavery Act and the Circular Economy.

Our challenge to you…

Inform yourself whist challenging our business representatives at our panel and networking events, such as:

  • How does your organisation define sustainability?
  • Is CSR just greenwashing or does it make a difference?
  • What skills do I need to be competitive in the sustainability job market?
  • What are the future trends for the energy or construction markets?
  • How is each sector driving forward a sustainable future?

Sustainability is a realistic, varied, interesting and prosperous career path which has many routes in, and isn’t just for geographers! Find out for yourself by attending our Environment Careers Week events!

This environmental auditor training session will show you how to undertake an audit. Put your new skills to the test auditing a UCL building! Boost your sustainability know how (and cv!) - gain skills whilst learning how to improve environmental impact.

Trip to UCL's Recycling Centre

Did you know? None of UCL's waste goes to landfill? Join us on a trip to ByWaters recycling centre to see where your waste goes and quiz them about careers in the industry.

Shaping a Sustainable Future with Unilever

Interested in how big corporations are approaching sustainability? Find out more about Unilever’s drive to implement an industry leading approach to sustainable practice in the consumer goods industry. You can become a part of this through their Future Leaders programmes!

Tuesday 6th February

Sustainability Careers Fair

Time: 12:00 – 15:00
Location: Wilkins Building, South Cloisters

Come along to our Sustainability Careers Fair. Organised by Green UCL –on hand to talk about our own career paths - there will be employers from construction, energy, biodiversity, procurement, charities and NGOs, campaigners and Law. Learn about their sustainable practices and routes into the sustainability job market. Employers will also be advertising their graduate roles.

Employers attending the Fair include: Bulb, BAM Construction, Institute of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability (ICRS), Thames Water, Mayor's Office, UCL's Innovation & Enterprise, UCLU's Volunteering Service, Friends of the Earth, Green Peace, WWF, Arup, EY, MACE, Charity Works, Landsec, Nicholas Hare Architects and more!

Come along to gain an insight into the companies and learn about what it's like to work as a sustainability consultant from the biggest in the business.

The importance of being environmentally active, socially responsible, and economically viable all at once has become a core interest for many companies. Learn how consultants aim to help them achieve these long-term goals.

This is a great opportunity to hone your business awareness skills and gain insight and understanding of the industry. You will also be able  to ask questions and network with our speakers.

Location: JBR (next to the JBR Room, Wilkins Building, by the Octagon Hall)

Enjoy an afternoon learning from our top chefs on how to cook healthy and sustainable food and quiz them on sustainability in the food industry. More info to come! Waste not, want not: this event is focusing on using leftover bread! In this class, you will learn how to use your leftover bread and turn them into:

  1. Pangrattato or Pane
  2. Bread & Butter Pudding
  3. Italian Panzanella Salad

Join us for a tour of the Crystal exhibition - the world’s largest exhibition dedicated to urban sustainability. It looks at cities in the year 2050, the main challenges they will be facing (urbanisation, climate change and demographic change) and technologies needed to combat them – renewable energies, water recycling, smart buildings and transport solutions, and more!

Step into recruiters' shoes: CVs for the environmental sector

With competition intense for environmental opportunities and recruiters often spending often less than 30 seconds assessing a CV, it’s never been more important to know how to market what you have effectively. In this session, we'll look at how to improve your CVs through interactive activities allowing you to 'sit in the recruiter's shoes'.  Understand what employers are looking for, how important making an impact is and how best to market yourself effectively for a specific position.
