Is transport modelling the enemy of cycling? Or are there ways of incorporating cycling successfully into conventional transport models? Hear the opinions of two knowledgeable speakers: Philip Loy (now of WSP) and Tim Gent (Atkins).

Philip will speak on "Cycling and Traffic Modelling", drawing on his research on the topic. Traffic modelling and the imperative to maintain or increase the 'capacity' of the road network has often been an issue, indeed a barrier, for the facilitation of cycling. How might this be addressed? Do we challenge the modelling, or is something broader required?

Tim's talk is entitled “Cycling in Strategic Transport Models”. This talk will look at the challenges and complexities of representing cycling within a multi-modal transport model in accordance with DfT WebTAG guidance. The Cambridge Sub Regional Model will be used as an example, with comparisons to other (usually less detailed) approaches, and discussion of challenges relating to data sources, cyclist behaviour and communicating results.
