Deadline Extended: Applications invited for Pro-Vice-Provost (Inequalities)

20 May 2025

We’re inviting applications for the role of Pro-Vice-Provost (Inequalities) - an exciting academic leadership opportunity to shape and lead the newly evolved UCL Grand Challenges programme. Apply by 22 June 2025.

inequalities

This is a unique chance for members of the UCL community to drive forward the Theme of Inequalities within Grand Challenges and help shape UCL’s impact on some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Please note: this role is available to internal applicants only. Deadline for applications is 22 June 2025

The Pro-Vice-Provost (PVP) will provide strategic academic leadership of the new Grand Challenge (GC) Inequalities theme. This is part of a flagship institution-wide programme aiming to apply the collective expertise of our community and its partners to this area of pressing concern, as well as to influence the university’s educational offering and institutional operations.

The role requires charismatic and engaging leadership sufficiently comfortable in the language of several disciplines to be able to excite and engage people within and beyond UCL about the potential benefits of involvement.

Reporting to the Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation & Global Engagement) [RIGE] and working closely with the Director of UCL Grand Challenges, the PVP will be a champion for the GC Theme, and the GC programme and approach, both within the UCL community and with external bodies. The role is available as an internal five-year 0.5FTE secondment, with funding for backfill of the appointee’s substantive post.

"This is an exciting opportunity to lead institution-wide efforts at UCL on one of the most pressing challenges of our time. You will have the platform to shape UCL’s contribution through interdisciplinary research, transformative education, innovative practice, and sustainable operations. By setting a bold strategic vision and fostering collaboration across the university, you will build a vibrant community, drive momentum, and deliver meaningful, lasting impact."

Sam Balch, Director of UCL Grand Challenges

We welcome joint applications from two candidates with complementary expertise and skills who wish to job-share. For context, existing Pro-Vice-Provost roles for the Climate Crisis, Mental Health & Wellbeing, and Data Empowered Societies are all job shares. This format creates opportunities for academics at different career stages to jobshare.

We particularly welcome applications from women, and men or women from an ethnic minority, as they are under-represented within UCL at senior levels.
