Objective and approach:

Despite efforts by successive governments, many post-industrial areas still struggle. They face deprivation, low investment, and rising inequality.

The approach involved an in-depth 'deep-place' study of Sacriston, County Durham. It used interviews, focus groups, and historical analysis to gather community insights.

The project, with local stakeholders, learned about the issues in "left-behind places." It also brought new insights into their problems.

Community impact

The EPSRC awarded an extra £29,000 for research on the infrastructure needs for community development.

This project presented evidence to Parliament. It showed the impact of regional inequalities, the built environment, and community engagement. The project developed a comprehensive insight into local needs and past policy impacts.

Key findings include:

  • Economic Displacement
  • Social Infrastructure Gaps
  • Community Resilience

The project proposed specific actions. It aimed to rebuild community ties and economic strength. These actions included reviving local hubs and improving social services. The challenges in Sacriston show a need for local, tailored policies.
