Cultures of Decolonisation

Cultures of Decolonisation, a research initiative of the UCL Grand Challenge of Cultural Understanding Working Group, was established to explore and evaluate how decolonisation is reflected in the university’s research structures, norms, and practices.

Objective and approach:

In 2021, the Cultures of Decolonisation project set out to map decolonising research initiatives and evaluate the extent to which UCL’s research structures and norms enable and support such efforts.

As part of this work, the project conducted in-depth interviews with 46 academics, 12 professional services staff, and 8 doctoral students from across the university. Two separate online surveys were carried out to broaden the scope of insights.

Findings from these discussions were brought together in a comprehensive report, which also incorporated a review of academic literature, project documentation, and websites related to decolonising research, both within UCL and in wider national and global contexts.
