The landmark Whitehall Studies, the report of the Commission on the Social Determinants of Health and 2010 report Fair Society, Healthy Lives, also known as the Marmot Review, have deepened understanding and action on the social determinants of health across the UK and globally. Yet, challenges to implementing and sustaining action remain. The Marmot Review 10 Years On (2020) found that health inequalities had widened overall, and the amount of time people spend in poor health had increased.

Bringing together leading experts from different disciplines and sectors, this half-day event will examine progress to date on tackling health inequalities in the UK and globally; identify shared challenges and opportunities for research and policy; and ask what’s next for creating a fairer, healthier society for all.

We are privileged to have a distinguished line-up of speakers and experts:

  • Dr Michael Spence: President & Provost of UCL
  • Professor Sir Michael Marmot: Professor of Epidemiology at UCL, Director of the UCL Institute of Health Equity, and Past President of the World Medical Association
  • Prof Ibrahim Ibrahim Abubakar: UCL's Pro-Provost (Health) and Dean of the Faculty of Population Health Sciences
  • Dr Jessican Allen: Deputy Director of the UCL Institute of Health Equity
  • Professor Johannes Siegrist: Senior Professor of Work Stress Research at Duesseldorf University
  • Professor Rochelle Burgess: Professor of Global Mental Health and Social Justice at UCL
