Interactive Citizen Science for Data-Empowered Decision Making
Co-creating data-driven tools with citizens to tackle nappy waste and inform policy through creative, accessible, and interactive models that empower families and decision-makers.

Disposable nappy waste is a growing global environmental challenge, yet its social and behavioural drivers remain poorly understood. This project builds on the UCL Plastic Waste Innovation Hub’s global citizen science initiative to collect data on nappy use and disposal, aiming to translate these insights into accessible, interactive tools for public and policy engagement.
Led by Dr Aarathi Prasad and Dr Alys McAlpine, the project brings together expertise in science communication, systems-based public health, and creative data engagement. Working with partners including Sense About Science and interdisciplinary artist Luke Demarest, the team will co-develop innovative formats—such as interactive models and visualisations—to help citizens and MPs explore the complex systems shaping nappy waste.
By returning citizen-generated data to the public in meaningful ways, the project empowers communities to influence policy and supports evidence-based, family-friendly solutions to a pressing environmental issue. It also lays the groundwork for future collaborations across science, art, and policy.
