Globalisation and Inter-ethnic Trust in Post-Socialist Macedonia
A preliminary investigation on Globalisation and Inter-ethnic Trust in Post-Socialist Madedonia
3 October 2018
The aim was to conduct a pilot study to assess the feasibility of a proposed behavioural economics study of industrialisation and interethnic trust in the Republic of North Macedonia. The UCL GC grant funded background research, as well as a preliminary fieldwork trip to Macedonia (11-15 February 2019). The trip was intended to:
- Identify a foreign-owned company that satisfied a set of requirements and was willing to take part in our experimental study;
- Establish a working relationship with a North Macedonian colleague (South East European University, Tetovo), who assisted on the ground;
- Familiarise ourselves with the local context. 7 foreign-owned companies across North-West North Macedonia were pre-selected, contacted and interviewed, with one finally selected to conduct the study.
This allowed the research team to gain in-depth knowledge of Macedonia's foreign-owned manufacturing sector, as well as a good background knowledge of interethnic relations between ethnic Albanians and ethnic Macedonians in this post-Yugoslav Republic.
