Everything you need to know about booking your gowns and photography, and how to purchase merchandise and flowers for your graduation ceremony.
You are required to wear academic dress at your graduation ceremony. You can purchase a gown or hire one at a discounted rate through UCL’s recommended supplier J. Wippell. Online bookings for July's ceremonies open on Thursday 5 May and close at 10am on Thursday 16 June. Bookings will open for the September ceremonies in early July.
Academic dress can also be hired on the day at full price.
Please watch this video before the day, which explains how to wear your academic dress.
See below for full details.
- Regulations and Awarding Bodies
The academic dress (robe) you wear depends on the qualification you are receiving in your graduation ceremony and the institution making the award. Although UCL received awarding powers in 2005, there are still some students who will receive a University of London award.
- Clothing on the day
Graduation ceremonies are formal occasions and therefore smart dress is appropriate. Remember your clothes can be seen under your academic dress (robe). Students are welcome to wear traditional or national dress. Robes are designed to be worn with shirts.
Please wear appropriate footwear for walking up and down the steps. Please note that shorts, denim and trainers are not appropriate attire for a graduation ceremony.
You can have your official graduation portraits taken on the day of your ceremony. This will take place in our photography spaces in the IOE immediately before your ceremony starts. We will also be putting on an extra photography space on campus for students who do not wish to attend the ceremony, but still want photos, or didn’t manage to get them taken before their ceremony. More details about this will be released prior to the ceremonies.
You can see what photography packages are available on the Tempest Photography website (click, ‘Not had your graduation yet?’). You cannot book these packages in advance, but please decide which option you would like before you arrive so your order can be processed quickly on the day.
On the day, you need to arrive 2 hours and 15 minutes before your ceremony begins to allow time for registration, photography and gown collection.
- Graduation merchandise
You can order from our range of UCL-branded clothing, notebooks, scroll holders and Jeremy Bentham graduation bears in advance from the UCL Shop.
We have partnered with London-based florist Flower Station if you or your guests would like to buy flowers for the day. Click Graduation Flowers collection for Click & Collect, and Hand-Tied collection or Luxury collection for London/Nationwide delivery before or after your graduation day.
If you choose Click & Collect, please note that you or your guests will be able to collect your flowers from Flower Station after the ceremony, during the drinks reception.
Some of the bouquets are also scented – please check carefully.
