UCL-Wits University Strategic Partner Funds 2025-26

UCL and University of Witwatersrand (Wits) are contributing matching funds to support collaborative education and research initiatives through a joint call for proposals.

The 2025/26 funding call opens from 29 May to 29 June 2025. 

Projects

This call invites proposals for partnership development activity in areas of mutual interest and complementary strengths that will deepen collaboration between UCL and Wits. Proposals should be co-led by a lead applicant at each institution, as appropriate to the activities proposed. 

Proposals relating to the following fields are particularly encouraged: 

  • Health 

  • Climate change 

  • Artificial Intelligence 

Projects which consider innovative approaches within these thematic areas will be prioritised. 

Up to six joint projects will be selected for funding. Proposals will be assessed by a committee composed of members from both institutions. 

Eligibility

UCL

Applications are open to UCL staff members with the following roles:  

  • Professor or equivalent. 

  • Associate Professor/ Reader or equivalent. 

  • Senior Lecturer/Principal Researcher/Principal Research Associate or equivalent. 

  • Lecturer/Senior Research Associate or equivalent. 

  • Post Doc/Researcher/Research Associate or equivalent. 

Wits

  • Applications are open to Wits staff members who are: 
    • academic / research staff or
    • post-doctoral fellows.
  • Applicants must have a PhD. 

Applicants from UCL must have an open-ended UCL contract or a fixed-term contract which lasts until at least July 2026. Applicants from Wits must be permanently employed or on a fixed-term contract until at least July 2026. 

Proposals are to be prepared jointly but only one joint proposal should be submitted by the UCL Lead Applicant through the submission link.

Value

Up to six successful projects will receive funding. Up to £8000 may be awarded for projects with the funding allocated to the academics at each institution according to the partner contribution.

  1. All applications must be jointly developed by a Principal Investigator from UCL and Wits. 

  1. All applicants must complete this application form and submit it online via the UCL portal. Access here

  1. Only complete submissions will be considered. 

  1. Late applications will not be considered.
