UCL in Latin America

From epidemiology to earthquake engineering, UCL has many successful research and educational collaborations with partners across Latin America.

Stephen Hart speaking
Our focus on Chile and Mexico has developed significantly over the last five years, and this will ensure that UCL positions itself as partner of choice for cross-disciplinary, co-designed, challenge-led research, as well as a postgraduate student destination of choice across Latin America.

UCL community

We're proud of our international and multi-cultural community which counts 404 students from Latin America currently studying at UCL and 4,271 UCL alumni in Latin America, as well as our academics and staff from or with links to Latin America.

Meet some of our students, alumni and academics through the slideshow above.

Research, partnerships and projects

UCL has strong links with institutions and organisations across Latin America, particularly in the areas of earth sciences, disaster reduction, public and global health and development studies.

For example, in Mexico, UCL is working with UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) focussing on the global, social and cultural impact of Covid-19. In Chile, UCL and PUC (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago) are exploring the role resilience plays in the everyday culture of Latin America. Find out more here and through UCL's Institute of the Americas.

UCL Regional Network for Latin America

UCL’s Latin America regional network facilitates cross-UCL connections and synergies between academic and professional services staff interested in collaborating with partners in the region

Led by Professor Stephen Hart, Pro-Vice-Provost (Latin America), the network meets regularly throughout the year to discuss current and future activity. See below for how to get involved.

A key partner for UCL in supporting collaborations in Latin America is Santander Universities. Our partnership began in 2007 and we continue using a majority of this funding to support staff and students in engaging with the region. The Santander Universities programmes provide UCL students and staff with many benefits, ranging from student mobility opportunities to awards for research visits to the region.
