Announcing the recipients of Global Engagement Seed Funding 2024/25
6 March 2025
This year’s UCL Global Engagement Seed Funding received nearly 400 applications across all faculties. A total of 137 projects have been awarded funding, spanning 39 countries and 139 global partners—a testament to the strength and reach of UCL’s international collaboration.

Since 2021, UCL Global Engagement has invested over £2 million in more than 400 projects through its seed funding schemes. These small but impactful grants have helped kickstart new research collaborations with global partners, many of which have gone on to leverage external funding, with over £12 million received in total so far and a further £60 million at planning or application stage.
Prof David Coen, UCL’s Pro-Vice-Provost (Global Engagement), highlighted the pivotal role these funds play in international research: “While the funding amounts may be relatively small, they have a catalytic effect—helping to build relationships, enhance researchers’ expertise, and strengthen institutional reputations. They can also serve as a pathway to citizen science, community engagement, or tackling global research challenges. Importantly, they often contribute to career progression, particularly for early career researchers.”
UCL’s Global Engagement Funds (GEF) offer grants of up to £5,000 to support collaboration between UCL staff and colleagues around the world. The funds are open to all disciplines and support a variety of activities, from research projects to knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary initiatives.
For larger-scale collaborations, Partner Funds provide up to £20,000 per project, with matched contributions from UCL’s key international partner institutions (a total of 15 Partner Funds ran for 24/25). These joint funding opportunities strengthen institutional ties and allow researchers to develop ambitious, long-term projects.
Prof Tara Keck, Vice-Dean (International) for Life Sciences and Chair of the Life Sciences GEF Panel, explained what the selection panel looks for: “We prioritise projects that might not fit traditional research funding criteria but have a clear plan for sustainability and measurable outcomes. Early career researchers are a particular focus, with nearly half of this year’s successful applicants at the early stages of their careers.”
For researchers, these funds provide the first step in building meaningful collaborations. Dr Shahab Akhavan, Lecturer at the Institute for Materials Discovery, shared how seed funding shaped his work: “The funding was crucial in both initiating and strengthening our collaboration with global partners. It allowed us to organise reciprocal visits, joint seminars, and lab tours—creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and curriculum development. These activities have laid the foundation for ongoing and future collaborations, including joint publications.”
What’s next?
While this year’s funding round has now closed, the next opportunity is just around the corner—applications for the 2025/26 Global Engagement Funds (GEF) will open on 21 May 2025 and close on 20 June 2025. Additionally, several Partner Fund calls will open in the Spring, including a trilateral call between AIIMS, UCL and IIT Delhi launching on 28 March 2025, with others becoming available in the Autumn.
To stay updated, please visit the Partner Funds page and subscribe to our mailing list for announcements on upcoming funding opportunities.
Early career researchers (ECRs) are strongly encouraged to apply and have strong success rates, particularly for the GEF, reflecting UCL’s commitment to supporting emerging researchers in building international networks.
Congratulations to all the 2024/25 funding recipients! A full list of awarded projects by region is available below.
