The IGH approach to sustainability and green issues
IGH is very active in climate change research as can be seen, for example, from the work of the UCL Lancet Climate Commission and involvement in the Lancet Countdown. But here we outline our approach to try and ensure that our ways-of-working are as sustainable as possible and discuss areas where we are working to make further improvements or trying new innovative ideas.
Current UCL initiatives include:
International Travel - Reductions in the amount of international and national travel, and reducing the footprint of necessary travel, is a key objective for IGH and UCL. UCL also has its own grove of trees which staff can contribute to if they wish to off-set travel in this way.
Working practicies in offices and laboratories - Another UCL initiative is Green Impact which “...is a UCL-wide environmental competition and accreditation scheme that allows departments and divisions across the university to improve their environmental impact…”. It focuses on working practices in offices and labs, where it is implementing LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework). As these initiatives are naturally more aligned with buildings rather than than university departments, IGH is joining green impact teams in the various buildings where we are sited.
