In 1970 Zef was recruited by Professor Otto Wolff to the Institute of Child Health’s Tropical Child Health Unit as a tutor on a new course for paediatricians in developing countries. The course was sponsored by Unicef and focused on concepts of maternal and child health services—that is, evidence based care in the community. He ran this course for many years, developing it into a diploma and then an MSc in Mother and Child Health degree course. The students on this course were senior paediatricians in their own countries, and Zef's teaching filtered down from the top to the basics of healthcare practice.
We are delighted that an ex-student taught by Zef, Dr Felicitas Zawairi, now WHO Representative in Malawi, has agreed to give a talk entitled 'Challenges for Mother and Child Health: perspectives from Southern Africa' in his memory.
