Dr Zawaira has a BSc in Zoology and Biochemistry from the University of Rhodesia, and graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1984. She has worked in the public health sector before graduating with an MSc in Maternal and Child Health at the the UCL Institute for Global Health.
She then worked as the Director of Maternal and Child Health in the Ministry of Health in Zimbabwe from 1991-1996.
She has studied in Boston, Massachusetts and left with hold a Diploma in Management Methods for International Health. She was then promoted to Principal Medical Director in the Ministry of Health before leaving to join the World Health Organisation in 1998. Dr Zawaira has been a WHO Representative in Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Malawi and now Botswana.
