What motivated you to apply for the African Graduate Scholarship to study at the Institute for Global Health?

From a young age in my home country, Nigeria, I have been keen on addressing the complex health challenges that affect diverse populations, particularly within Africa's low- and middle-income countries. My background in pharmacy, complemented by three years of experience as a healthcare professional, provided me with firsthand insights into the limitations and gaps within the Nigerian healthcare system. However, I realised that to create meaningful and sustainable change, a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach was necessary, one that goes beyond clinical practice to encompass policy, community engagement, and innovative solutions.

The African Graduate Scholarship offered by the Institute for Global Health at UCL presented a unique and invaluable opportunity to pursue this vision. UCL's reputation as a global health and public health research leader was a significant motivating factor for me. The chance to study at a world-class institution, surrounded by esteemed experts and a diverse cohort of peers, promised an environment where I could expand my knowledge, refine my skills, and collaborate on impactful projects.

Moreover, I saw the scholarship as a springboard for my long-term goal of bridging healthcare disparities in Africa through evidence-based interventions and community-driven strategies. Being a recipient of this scholarship made my childhood dream of studying at a world-class institution like UCL a reality and has so far empowered me to contribute to a more equitable global health landscape. The support and resources provided by the African Graduate Scholarship are instrumental in enabling me to delve deeper into global health issues, particularly those that affect vulnerable communities, and to develop innovative solutions that can drive positive change. This scholarship provides the platform I need to transform my passion into action, equipping me with the tools and knowledge to become a catalyst for improvement and equity in health systems across Africa.

How did you find the application process? Were there any challenges you faced or any tips you have for other students applying for scholarships?

The application process for the African Graduate Scholarship was both rigorous and rewarding. It required a clear articulation of my academic achievements, professional experiences, and future aspirations, all of which demanded careful reflection and precise communication. One of the primary challenges I faced was ensuring that my personal statement effectively conveyed my passion for global health and my commitment to making a tangible impact in Africa.

Another significant challenge was gathering and organizing the necessary documentation, such as academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and proof of professional experience. This process required meticulous attention to detail and adherence to deadlines, which can be daunting amidst other academic and professional responsibilities.

For students applying for scholarships, my pro tip would be to start the application process early. This allows ample time to gather all required documents, seek feedback on your personal statement, and refine your application to best showcase your strengths and aspirations. Additionally, it's crucial to thoroughly research the scholarship's objectives and tailor your application to align with them. Demonstrating a clear understanding of how the scholarship will help you achieve your goals can significantly enhance your chances of success.

Furthermore, one key attribute that stood out for me in my scholarship application was my resilient spirit. Never say never when the path gets tough and always look for ways to overcome challenges because nothing good comes easy. Lastly, don't hesitate to seek support from mentors, professors, or peers who have experience with scholarship applications. Their insights and feedback can provide valuable guidance and help you present your best self to the admissions and/or selection committee.
