The UCL Global Governance Institute and the UCL Institute of Global Health jointly hosted a high-level policy workshop in partnership with UNAIDS and the Lancet Commission: Defeating AIDS-Advancing Global Health in December 2013.

The UNAIDS and Lancet Commission, co-chaired by President Joyce Banda of the Republic of Malawi, African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and Professor Peter Piot, Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, is dedicated to ensuring the effective positioning of AIDS in the post-2015 development agenda and to generating high profile advocacy for ending AIDS as a shared triumph of the post-2015 era. The Commission will table its final report in June 2014.

This workshop at UCL formed part of the UNAIDS and Lancet Commission's commitment to direct engagement with key thought-leaders in the field of HIV, global health and sustainable development. The workshop deliberations directly informed the ongoing work of the UNAIDS and Lancet Commission Third Working Group on AIDS response and global health architecture. It also presented an opportunity for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers from across disciplines to engage and share insights on this transformational arena of global health governance and its implications more generally for global governance.

An outcome document providing a response to the Working Group draft paper on global health and AIDS architecture and its proposed recommendations to the UNAIDS and Lancet Commission is in preparation. The workshop further assisted in the development of a network brought together by a professional and/or scholarly interest in the contributions of the AIDS response to broader global health outcomes, as well as formed the basis for future collaboration in light of the high-level political meeting of the UNAIDS-Lancet Commission in London scheduled for February 2014.
