These cover, for example, relations between leaders; the centrality of 'identity' issues; why things so often go wrong; and why there is no guarantee of a happy ending.

About the Speaker

Sir Tom Philipps

Sir Tom Phillips is a former British diplomat whose postings included Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ambassador to Israel, and High Commissioner to Uganda. Following his retirement from the FCO, he was Commandant of the Royal College of Defence Studies from 2014 to 2018.Tom has also worked as International Adviser to the Prince’s Charities’ International Sustainability Unit, and been a member of the Wilton Park Advisory Council and Associate Fellow of Chatham House's Middle East and North Africa Programme. He is an Honorary Fellow of St Edmund’s College, Cambridge and an Honorary Fellow and member of the Advisory Board of Oxford University’s Changing Character of War Programme. His publications include several articles on the Middle East.
