Towards Positive Ageing - Collaboratively Challenging Barriers and Navigating Support
5 September 2024
Menopause involves significant challenges. Dr. Marzena Nieroda's recent workshop and forthcoming book chapter advocate for a holistic, supportive approach to address these challenges comprehensively.
Menopause, a significant transition in a woman's life, often brings with it a myriad of physical, emotional, and social challenges. The societal stigmas and misconceptions surrounding this natural process can further complicate these challenges.
On March 20, 2024, an impactful knowledge exchange workshop organized by Dr. Marzena Nieroda and supported by UCL Healthcare Innovation Pitching Society (HIPS) took place at the UCL Global Business School for Health. The event was part of a collaborative project between UCL and HBSUK sponsored by the Innovation & Enterprise “Innovation in Women’s Health Challenge” grant. The workshop, titled "Workplace Equity to Support Healthy Ageing and Women's Health," assembled experts from various fields to discuss the obstacles faced by menopausal women and brainstorm innovative solutions.

Following insights from that workshop, the workshop team coauthored an upcoming book chapter in "Myths of Menopause," edited by Dr. Nicky Keay, UCL. The chapter, titled “Towards Positive Ageing: Collaboratively Challenging Barriers and Navigating Support," presents a comprehensive look at how to foster a more supportive environment for women experiencing menopause. The chapter's authors, including Dr. Marzena Nieroda, Dr. Abdul Seckam, HBSUK, Dr. Dania Posso, UCL, Dr. Rodrigo Rodriguez-Fernandez, International SOS, Dr. Orlanda Allen, HCA Healthcare, Andre Coutinho, GoFw, Thalia Anagnostopoulou, UCL, Professor Joyce Harper, and Dr. Nicky Keay, UCL, emphasize the need to move away from a problem-focused and discipline-centric approach. They advocate for a person-centeredstrategy that integrates multiple disciplines to provide holistic support for women during menopause.
The insights from the workshop, as presented in the chapter, underscore the urgent need for systemic change to support women through menopause. By addressing stigmas, promoting holistic care, and fostering transformational communities, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women navigating menopause and aging. The forthcoming chapters in "Myths of Menopause" will continue to offer valuable perspectives and solutions to drive this essential change.
Myths of Menopause will be published on 25th of November 2024 and is available for preorder from Sequoia Books. Use discount code "Athena" when placing your pre-order.
